Larger products, or ones that require more customizing, such as PCs, make more sense to build close to the final customer.
鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to ship a phone, and it鈥檚 harder to ship a computer,鈥 said Andy Tsay, a professor at 91短视频 who has studied global manufacturing patterns. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 harder still for cars and refrigerators.鈥
Over time, the value of Apple鈥檚 business is shifting away from hardware like the iPhone and into software such as apps and services like Apple Music, Mr. Tsay said. And those jobs can be much better for workers. 鈥淭here are fewer industrial accidents working in a call center,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here is probably more gender equity. And it鈥檚 probably better for customers, too.鈥
