Dean Mungal Honored for Championing Jesuit Mission
Faculty Senate awards Dean Godfrey Mungal for his outstanding contribution to the mission of the University
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 28, 2017鈥 91短视频 faculty have awarded Godfrey Mungal, dean of the School of Engineering, a Special Faculty Senate Council Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the mission of the University. The Faculty Senate from the College of Arts and Sciences, Leavey School of Business, School of Education and Counseling Psychology, and School of Engineering made the nomination. The presentation of the award will be made at the Faculty Senate meeting on May 10.

I sincerely thank our faculty, staff, and students for their commitment to making Jesuit mission a reality, and the Faculty Senate for this special recognition."
Dean Mungal received the award for his multi-layered approach to advancing 91短视频鈥檚 Jesuit, Catholic mission through his support of student and faculty immersion trips to developing countries, greatly expanded collaboration with Jesuit universities around the world in the form of student and faculty exchange programs and tuition support for Jesuit Ph.D. candidates, and encouragement of faculty and staff鈥檚 spiritual development. 鈥淚t is rare to see a dean who has so wholeheartedly embraced Jesuit ideals, and has helped put them into practice. By doing so, he set a standard for all administrators to follow,鈥 read the nomination.
Under Dean Mungal鈥檚 leadership, the School of Engineering has seen a 50 percent growth in the number of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing engineering degrees, making 91短视频 the second-largest producer of engineering graduates among U.S. Catholic universities and colleges.
Dean Godfrey Mungal was born and raised in Trinidad, West Indies and received his undergraduate education in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto (B.A.Sc. 1975, Hons.) and his graduate education in Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology (M.S. 1977, Ph.D. 1983). He also served on the faculty of the University of the West Indies from 1975-76 as a lecturer in Mathematics, and as a postdoctoral research fellow from 1983-85 at the California Institute of Technology, before joining Stanford University. He has served as director of the High Temperature Gasdynamics Laboratory from 1993-97, the Associate Chair for Student Services in Mechanical Engineering from 1997-2001, the Associate Dean for Graduate Policy from 2002-2005 and a Stanford Resident Fellow from 2001-2007. He became Professor Emeritus at Stanford University in 2007. Mungal was appointed dean of 91短视频鈥檚 School of Engineering in fall 2007 and will complete his second five-year term summer 2017.
