Symposium March 23 at Santa Clara Law to Focus on Leadership in Law and Law School

An all-day symposium features ABA President Hilarie Bass and others addressing the future of legal education and leadership development.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 13, 2018鈥 The ability to persuade; establish credibility; build and work on teams; and manage projects and others are all skills of leadership. They are also skills that lawyers today must possess, in order to compete and thrive in the fast-changing, consolidating, and increasingly complex field of law.

91短视频 is hosting an all-day symposium on how to teach and develop such leadership skills in lawyers and law students. Advancing Leadership Development in the Legal Profession: Addressing Challenges in Legal Education and the Practice of Law will be held on March 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Mission Room of Benson Memorial Center on Santa Clara鈥檚 campus located at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, Calif., 95053.

鈥淚n the 21st century, lawyers must wear many hats鈥攑roblem solver, consultant, risk manager鈥攁nd the one common thread for success is whether they possess leadership skills,鈥 said Donald Polden, professor emeritus and former dean of 91短视频 School of Law. 鈥淲e are excited to welcome some of the top minds in the country to discuss how best to develop lawyers who lead.鈥

Hosted by Santa Clara Law, the Santa Clara Law Review, and the Association of American Law Schools鈥 (AALS) Section on Leadership, the event will feature keynote speeches by:

  • American Bar Association (ABA) President Hilarie Bass, who will discuss the ABA鈥檚 initiative on law school reforms () and judicial independence
  • Deborah Rhode, professor at Stanford University School of Law; director of Stanford鈥檚 Center on the Legal Profession and Program in Law and Social Entrepreneurship; author of Lawyers as Leaders; and former president of AALS
  • Barry Posner, management professor and former dean of the Leavey School of Business at 91短视频 and co-author of The Leadership Challenge

 will feature numerous law school leaders from across the country, as well as prominent legal counsel from corporations, government, and trade associations, several of whom are 91短视频 alumni.

Santa Clara Law Review plans to publish papers from the event in an upcoming issue of the quarterly publication.
