Miller Center Executive Director Leaving to Join a New Impact Enterprise

Thane Kreiner, Ph.D., will leave Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship to join the executive leadership team of a new impact-enterprise entity.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 5, 2020 鈥 After nearly 10 years leading 91短视频鈥檚 Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Executive Director Thane Kreiner will be leaving April 30 to join a new impact enterprise as a founding team member.

Kreiner鈥檚 next venture is focused on discovering and harnessing transformative technologies to address the world鈥檚 most challenging problems.

Kreiner, a former life sciences executive and startup founder, has overseen tremendous growth in the programming, impact, and reach of Miller Center, one of three Centers of Distinction at 91短视频.

Miller Center now serves more than 150 social entrepreneurs a year 鈥 an order of magnitude increase from when he took the helm鈥 through what has become the world-class Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI庐) Accelerator program. Through its proven structured curriculum drawing on Jesuit principles, strong mentorship by Silicon Valley executives, networking, and introductions to financing opportunities, Miller Center helps the entrepreneurs discern pathways to scale the beneficial impact of their work.

More than 1,000 social enterprises have received such accompaniment, collectively impacting the lives of more than 400 million people in 100 countries.

鈥淲e will greatly miss Thane鈥檚 energy, vision, and leadership of one of Santa Clara鈥檚 鈥榗rown jewel鈥 Centers of Distinction,鈥 said Interim Provost Lisa Kloppenberg. 鈥淢iller Center under Thane鈥檚 guidance has been a source of tremendous pride, amazing progress in combating poverty and social injustice, and a true ambassador of Santa Clara鈥檚 most dearly held values.鈥

Under Kreiner鈥檚 leadership, Miller Center also launched new programs including:

  • The pioneering Global Social Benefit Fellowship for students, created in 2012, provides undergraduate students with transformative learning experiences working alongside social enterprises around the world. Of 139 Fellows so far, 10 have won Fulbrights and three have been named valedictorian.
  • A GSBI庐 Online program, co-created with World Bank, began in 2011.
  • An initiative to enable replication of successful enterprises was launched in 2015.
  • A dedicated program, Social Entrepreneurship at the Margins, now in its second year, was created for enterprises that are focused on helping migrants, refugees, and human trafficking victims.
  • Catholic Action for Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) initiative began recently to help Church ministries become more sustainable by adopting entrepreneurial principles.
  • This year, a Pathways Out of Poverty (POP) program was launched to help social enterprises serving poor and other vulnerable populations in the United States.
  • Miller Center鈥檚 GSBI Mentor network grew to over 250 executives with increased diversity in every dimension.

鈥淚 am honored and humbled to have walked with so many amazing people on this incredible journey to impact,鈥 said Kreiner. 鈥淪anta Clara鈥檚 devotion to ending poverty and protecting the planet and its attention to servant leadership has been formative for me in many dimensions and is forever part of my DNA.鈥

While at Santa Clara, Kreiner authored two books, Composition of Life and A Walk in the Garden.

Prior to joining 91短视频, Kreiner was founder, president, and CEO of Second Genome, a microbiome analysis company. He founded and was president and CEO of Presage Biosciences, and was start-up president and CEO of iPierian, a regenerative medicine venture acquired by Bristol-Myers Squibb. He spent 14 years at Affymetrix, , the DNA chip industry pioneer.
