Bonita Banducci (engineering) presented "Realize Planet 50/50: Brilliant Women and Great Men in Partnership at Work," at the 61st Session of the Commission on the  at the United Nations, and at the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks meeting in San Francisco.

Ahmed Amer (computer engineering), Silvia Figueira (computer engineering), Brian Green (engineering and Markkula), Tim Hight (mechanical engineering), and Tonya Nilsson (civil engineering) were recently elected as Markkula Center Faculty Scholars, "recognizing their interest in and engagement with ethical issues in their professional fields.”

Jonathan Zhang (bioengineering) received a  Bioinnovation Research grant of $300,000 for 3 years. The grant is renewable every 3 years for bioinnovation and biodiscovery research in the Bay Area. Dr. Zhang will use the fund to support his research in biopharmaceutical research.

Naeem Turner-Bandele '18 (electrical engineering) was elected to the National Society of Black Engineers Region VI executive board as Programs Chair to develop programming, services and organizing events for NSBE members and pre-collegiate students in the Western US, West Canada, Baja Mexico, Asia, Australia, and South Pacific.

Jyotsna Gopinath, bioengineering and chemistry sophomore, wrote an op-ed for  about the role eco fashion plays in her life.

����������&�Բ�����;��á��� is the new Frugal Innovation Hub Director of Programs and Partnerships. Allan has collaborated extensively with FIH in the last 4 years through his work with , a program to help the homeless and enable understanding of their needs.

Arjun Menon MS '12 (robotics and mechatronics) was a featured presenter at 91����Ƶ’s UAV Workshop in March. Menon is a robotics software engineer at DJI, the market leader for hobby-class drones.

Silvia Figueira (Frugal Innovation Hub) gave a talk about the humanitarian projects in development at 91����Ƶ at InnoFrugal, in Helsinki, Finland, on April 25.

Toshishige Yamada (Center for Nanostructures) received an Outstanding Reviewer Certificate from Journal of Physics, Condensed Matter, Institute of Physics (UK) in recognition of "invaluable service in upholding the quality and integrity our publications." 

Nam Ling (computer engineering) was appointed as Chair Professor for three years at , China. Nam and the Computer Engineering Department also received $217,440 from  supporting "Research on JVET JEM Video Coding," for future generation coders/decoders. Ling's team has 7 adopted standard contributions with 18 patents filed and 6 granted so far.

Engineering undergraduates Jyotsna Gopinath '19, Hallie McNamara '19, Alexander Moran '19, Sydney Thompson '19, Claire Hultquist '19, and Steven Parks '18 have been selected as 2017 Global Fellows. 

New interdisciplinary minor in Technical Innovation, Design Thinking, and the Entrepreneurial Mindset makes it possible to take classes in this area (most just one unit each), participate in Innovation Challenges and other activities, and get credit recognized on student transcripts.

University Maker Workshop: Hosted at 91����Ƶ, representatives from 18 universities/colleges including Georgia Tech, Villanova, Baylor, St Louis University, Lafayette, ASU, and Olin discussed ways to better use makerspaces to advance innovation and entrepreneurially minded learning, among other topics.

UAV Workshop:  Seven universities sent representatives to our workshop on university uses of unmanned aerial vehicles for education, research, and campus operations. Topics included FAA/local/campus guidelines, and policies and procedures developed by attendees to ensure safe and productive flying.
